Project description
The challenge
The Kagoro girls’ school in Suba is part of the Green Forest Social Initiative, a collaborative project established in 2008, also by ICS. The initiative concentrates on the Gwassi Hills, a remote area grappling with appalling poverty and hunger due to disappointing harvests and excessive tree felling. Poverty makes social change close to impossible.
The changers
The girls in Suba want to go to school so they can develop further under their own steam. Since 2006 the local population collected about 23,000 Euro for the construction of a girls’ school. ICS also invested, and in 2011 the Kagoro girls’ school opened its doors. Girls from the poorer levels of the population can go there; if they can’t afford the school fees, they are eligible for a scholarship or a loan.

The change
Every year, 120 girls have the opportunity to follow a course. They attend lessons and also learn how to earn money. The Kagoro school works according to the sustainable school model, in which the students help to initiate activities that bring in money for the school. Eventually the school is intended to be largely self-sufficient.
